Tis the Season for Poe

I'm not a big fan of scary stuff. I don't like horror films. Not at all. Not even the ones that "aren't that scary" to everyone else.

But...

I love to read Edgar Allen Poe in October. I have a small hardbound copy of Tales of Mystery and Imagination. It's a collection of short stories. Some of my favorites are The Cask of Amontillado, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Pit and the Pendulum. It's really hard to pick just one favorite story...

For his poetry, my favorite is "The Raven." Everyone knows this one, right? While a man sits in his room and mourns for his lost love, a raven comes in and perches above the door... "Quoth the raven Nevermore"...

"The Raven" is a poem that is meant, in my opinion, to be read aloud. It just doesn't have the same effect when read to yourself. I stumbled upon this website while looking for an audio recording of "The Raven."

From the Librovox website, you can download audio books, poems, and plays to your computer and ipod. They also have a podcast. Yesterday at the gym I listened to a few chapters of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I also listened to A Midsummer Night's Dream while working on halloween costumes for the kids... There are so many stories to choose from, and they are all FREE! Who doesn't love free stuff? Check it out!!

In the meantime, an inquiring mind wants to know:
Which Poe story or poem is your favorite?
Post your favorite in the comments.

A very long time ago, I dated a guy who absolutely loved The Raven. So, I memorized the entire thing to impress him- ha! It took forever! I still remember bits and parts of it, but tha'ts it. It is definitely a classic.

I can't stand scary movies either. Just makes me feel evil.
